Lead by example and remind your Girl Scouts how important it is to give back to the community. It's important for Girl Scouts to "help people at all times,” and to “make the world a better place.”
Here are some ideas submitted by our local area leaders:
o Caroling at nursing homes
o Doing crafts with and visiting nursing home residents
o Collecting canned goods for homeless shelters and food banks
o Collecting or making blankets, hats, gloves, scarves for the homeless
o Buying/collecting activity books and crayons for displaced children at shelters
o Birthday-in-a-bag for community resource centers at schools
o Pulling invasive plant species at Lost River Cave
o Making Valentines or Christmas cards for nursing home residents
o Washing windows for a Senior living complex
o Serving at the local food bank
o Make lap quilts for nursing home.
o Collect items for local animal shelter / humane society
o Volunteer at animal shelter
o Sponsor a pet
o Sponsor Christmas gifts at a nursing home
o Sponsor Angel Tree
o Get involved with local Veteran’s programs
o Socks for seniors program
o Toy collection for children’s hospital
o Flag collection for proper retirement
o Trash pickup at different areas (ex. lakeshore cleanup at Barren River or Troop meeting place)
o Planting flowers at town squares
o Building new fences for parks
o Feminine hygiene products drive for schools, women’s shelters or public libraries
o Volunteer (ex. Room at the Inn) or donate shelf stable bag lunches
